Busy Weekend for Thorndale Volunteers

By Photographer/Fire Police Officer Mark Walsh
September 10, 2016

The weekend for the Thorndale Volunteers started off early Saturday morning as a group of members gathered at the firehouse to begin preparations for the Caln Community Day later that afternoon. Approx 11 volunteers spent 3 hours setting up the fire prevention trailer, 4 light towers to help light up the area once it got dark, closing down G.O. Carlson Blvd, Dunk Tank and several other things. By 11:30 everything was set up and ready to go and the volunteers had a few hours off before Community Day started.

That time off didn't last long however, at 12:06 Station 38 was alerted to a house fire on the 500blk of Olive St in the City of Coatesville along with Station 41, 43, 37 and 76. Initial reports were of a dryer on fire in the residence. Rescue 38 made the response a short time after dispatch. As crews were responding Ambulance 37-1 arrived on scene and reported smoke showing from the rear of the structure. Ladder 41-1 arrived on scene and stretched an 1 3/4 handline to the rear of the building while Engines 43 and 37-1 both dropped 5 inch line in the roadway to supply the trucks with water if needed. Engine 37-1 also pulled an 1 3/4 handline to the rear and assisted Ladder 41-1's crew with extinguishing the fire. Luckily the fire was contained to the area directly around the dryer and no further extension was found. The fire was placed under control shortly after arrival and crews assisted in repacking hose and getting the apparatus back in service.

After crews returned to the firehouse a short time later it was time for Community Day. The fire company had Engine 38, Traffic 38, Squad 38 and the Antique on display for the public while Utility 38 and Rescue 38 remained parked in an area that was accessible to the volunteers and able to leave if a call were to come in. Crews manned the Fire Prevention Trailer and handed out fire prevention material while also manning and some participating in the dunk tank. Later in the evening crews put the light towers in service to light up the area and also had a crew on standby for the fireworks. We had a great time again this year. The volunteers spent a total of approx 12 hours from beginning to end setting up and breaking down everything as well as responding to the fire.

On Sunday things didn't slow down much for the Volunteers. The day started off with a 9/11 Mass at Thorndale United Methodist Church. The fire company was invited by Pastor Mark Moore to a mass honoring our members and their families for our service to the community. The membership also prayed for our safety and protection. 8 members along with some of their family members went to the service. We would like to extend our Thanks to Pastor Mark Moore and the members of Thorndale United Methodist Church for having us, praying for us and for continually supporting the Fire Company.

After mass several members attended the 15th Anniversary of September 11th at the National Iron & Steel Heritage Museum in Coatesville. Members attended the ceremony at 1pm and then got a chance to walk thru the museum and see everything that they had inside.

While the event at the National Iron & Steel Heritage Museum was going on 5 members along with some friends of the company participated in the 9/11 Hero's Run in West Chester. The event was a 5k run/walk and all of our members finished with amazing times and had a great time doing it in honor of all those that lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks.

During all the events on Sunday the Company also handled to calls a Fire Alarm and an Accident on the 30 Bypass.

As you can see the Company was kept busy all weekend but Thanks to a group of dedicated Volunteers everything went off without a hitch.

WE WILL NEVER FORGET

Units: Engine 38, Rescue 38, Squad 38, Utility 38, Traffic 38
