Rescue Task Force Assist to East Whiteland

By Deputy Chief Daniel Donnachie
September 19, 2016

On Monday September 19, 2016, the Thorndale Trench Rescue Team was dispatched as part of the Chester County Rescue Task Force (CCRTF) to assist the East Whiteland Fire Company (Station 5) with a Technical Rescue at the Glasgow Quarry on Morehall Road in East Whiteland Township. Station 5 units on the scene arrived to find a large articulating dump truck that had rolled off a roadway on the property and was located approximately 100+ feet down an embankment with the operator still inside the vehicle.

Due to heavy rains and less than ideal ground conditions, Glasgow personnel quickly constructed a stone roadway to allow CCRTF apparatus and two heavy rotator recovery trucks from Abel Brothers Towing to access the scene. Station 5 and CCRTF personnel developed a rescue plan for accessing and removing the patient. Rope rescue systems were rigged off one of the heavy rotator recovery trucks and two large quarry front end loaders. CCRTF Technicians were lowered down to the overturned dump truck as well as a cable from the heavy rotator recovery truck to secure the dump truck in place, but the operator was able to self-extricate himself prior to the cable being hooked up. The operator was packaged in a SKED and hauled back up the steep embankment along with the CCRTF Technicians. Paramedics from Malvern and Berwyn transported the patient to the local trauma center.

After crews cleaned up equipment on the scene, they returned to their respective stations for an extensive cleanup operation.
